I met Vanessa 7 yrs ago and felt that instant connection. She’s my sister from another mother. That’s why I was glad when she decided to join our team as an associate photographer and I was beyond thrilled when she asked me to document her 10th year wedding anniversary to her husband, Ryan. They renewed their vows in beautiful Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas in Maui surrounded by their parents and beautiful kids. It was an emotional ceremony and Ryan surprised her by pulling out a Tiffany box during the vow exchange. Congrats Vanessa + Ryan!

Angela + Wayne: La Jolla, CA

I gotta admit that I was a bit nervous shooting this wedding. Wayne + Angela are very good wedding photographers themselves so I totally felt the pressure. But once I started to click the shutter, all the stress melted away and I was able to enjoy the moments, which there were plenty. Angela is such an artsy gal and she did all the pretty details herself, including the cute boutonnieres for the groomsmen and the flowers for the mom. She even made necklaces as gifts for her bridesmaids. Talk about crafty hands!

From the get-go, smiles never left their faces despite the pouring rain. After an emotional ceremony with tears and laughter, the sky cleared up and we did some beachside portraits before the precious sliver of light went away. I just love this wedding because I could really see the love and celebration along with the pretty details. I think Wayne and Angela pulled off a perfect wedding! What a way to end my 2011!

It was a perfect day by the shore for Rachel + Dan to get married. Rachel, a former Miss Chinese International who represented Malaysia in 2003, met Dan in Hong Kong on a church gathering trip and romance sparked. Dan, who worked for WB, proposed 7 months into the relationship and they were set to have two weddings. One in LA where they both live and another in Malaysia where Rachel is from. With both Rachel + Dan being devout Christian, they started the ceremony with worship and it was incredibly emotional. Rachel and the girls also had been practicing a group dance performance to surprise the guests during the reception. The energy on the dance floor was phenomenal and it was really a perfect day for a wedding. :)

Idya+Theddy: Jakarta, Indonesia

A few months back, I got an email inquiry to shoot a wedding in Jakarta, Indonesia.

From the moment I Skyped with Idya + Theddy, I felt at ease and we connected right away. We chatted for about an hour about the possibilities of shooting their 1500-guest reception and I couldn’t help but being very intrigued about what to expect.

Now that I’ve experienced it, I can’t wait to share the photographs and stories about some of the Chinese-Indonesian traditions I witnessed.

Idya + Theddy got ready at the venue, Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, which is one of the oldest 5-star hotel in Indonesia. The morning started off normally. Breakfast, shower, make up and hair. You know, the usual. Then, as part of the Chinese customs, Idya’s Mom and Dad helped putting on the jewelry and the gloves. I guess the gloves were necessary because the bride and groom would later on shake hands with ALL the guests who were gracious enough to attend the reception.

Meanwhile, Theddy and his groomsmen had to pick up the bride in her room but the bridesmaids weren’t going to make it easy for the guys. They had to go through a series of stunts and some intense negotiations to prove that the groom was worthy of the bride. Hilarity ensued. :)

From there, they had to go to the lobby together and left the hotel in the limo to symbolize that they were leaving the bride’s home to go visit the groom’s parents to do the tea ceremony.

Later in the evening, the reception started. Outside the venue lobby there were lots and lots of boards made out of flowers congratulating the happy couple, another Indonesian tradition. Then guests started coming through security and metal detectors. Lots of food, lots of guests. I guess when you have 1000-plus guests, the venue has to be bigger than a football field. I also saw the biggest wedding cake I’ve ever seen. So big, in fact, that Idya and Theddy had to cut it with a knife on a long pole.

At this point, I had been shooting for about 11 hours and the next few events started to blur into one another. I knew that the guests were enjoying all kinds of gourmet foods and desserts while the band was playing some music in the background. Then there was a dance performance while a giant camera on a crane covered the entire event live and broadcasted it on two very large LCD screens so all the guests could see. Lastly, the couple threw the bouquet together and anyone could participate in catching it. Not only the single ladies.

All in all, I’m glad I did it. It certainly was very different from what I normally shoot here in the US. And I got the chance to work alongside my talented friends Edward Suhadi and Erwin Wijanto, who shoot this type of weddings week in and week out. I certainly learned a lot from them.

And lastly, I’d like to express my gratitude to Idya + Theddy who had flown me a few thousand miles, trusted me and believed in my vision in unfamiliar territory. I want to try to do this once a year. Any more takers? :)

What I found the most special about this wedding is how Janet and Chris are really, really into each other and they are genuinely happy all day. They can’t wipe the smiles off of their faces from getting ready to the end of the night and they really inspired me. We traveled a lot from the Omni Hotel in Los Angeles for the getting ready, to the Wayfarer’s Chapel in Rancho Palos Verdes for the ceremony, and back to Los Angeles for the reception at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Guests were entertained by the couple’s rousing first dance performance and the dance floor was going crazy with energy all night. Congrats Janet + Chris! I’m honored to document your wedding. :)

It’s always great shooting at the Parker. Especially if your client is awesome like Lara + Ben. This wedding is filled to the brim with story and style. It’s a very emotional ceremony for both Lara + Ben because Lara’s aunt, who practically raised her since childhood, passed away earlier this year and Ben’s dad, who couldn’t attend the wedding due to illness, was watching the ceremony through video chat. At the end of the ceremony, they released butterflies as a tribute. The reception decor awesomely fits the couple’s style. Ben aka Deru is a musician/DJ, so naturally the night was fueled by 4 DJ’s on rotation throughout the night. Congratulations guys!

Evie + Will came all the way from Singapore to get married in Southern Cali, where Will originally came from. I met them last year for their engagement shoot and we hit it off right away. They’re super chill and couldn’t stop smiling all day! We started off with some torture, ehm, games that Will had to go through before seeing Evie for the first time while Evie hid in a room trying to steal a peek. Who knew how well the dude can juggle and sing at the same time? :) Then after two tea ceremonies, they had a wonderful western ceremony at the Anaheim, Marriott followed by a multiple-course dinner and dancing. And Kerri Underhill did an amazing job as usual. Thanks to Dexter Lo for second shooting with me. Congrats Evie + Will!

Wendy +Brandon: Diamond Bar, CA

I knew Wendy + Brandon a couple of years ago when they volunteered to model for one of our private workshop. We hit it off nicely and fast forward to April, they’re getting hitched! This couple is super-stylish and all kinds of amazing with DIY projects. They put together their invitation as well as the centerpieces, which was no small feat since they had 300 guests attending their wedding! And Wendy made her own veil started with the floral piece she bought from Etsy.

We had a perfect day in Diamond Bar for a wedding and it started with the tea ceremony, followed by the western ceremony where both the bride and groom read their vows from their iPhones. Wendy was breathtaking in her Lazaro dress and Louboutins shoes and Brandon in his Paul Smith tux.

During the reception, Wendy changed into her custom-made Ao Dai, a traditional Vietnamese costume, for the table toasts. And the guests danced their 10-course meal away to end the night. Special thanks to Dexter Lo for second shooting with me.

I love it when my couples are unfazed. Nothing can break the awesomeness of Jackie & Tony. Not even a full day of storm and wind. And considering they came all the way from NY, it’s quite a feat! (Here‘s a bonus of their e-session in NYC)
Due to the insane amount of rain, the ceremony they planned outdoors got moved to the patio of the private residence they rented. Still, the support from all their friends and family were enough to keep them going in great spirit all day. The ceremony was done by Maui’s own Pastor Laki Ka’ahumanu then the party continued under the tent til the end of the night. Vanessa came and helped second shoot this wedding.

Claire and Vance flew from New York and got married at the Julia Morgan ballroom in San Francisco. I met Claire when I was shooting another wedding in New York last year and we hit it off right away. She’s a shopping expert and gladly showed my the best spots in NYC to shop! We also had a great time with both of them during an engagement session all around NYC.

Originally from the bay area, they decided to have their wedding closer to family. Because of the unexpected deteriorating condition of the Merchant’s Exchange lobby where they’re supposed to have their ceremony, it had to be moved to another building close by that used to be a bank. We took advantage of this opportunity and used the giant vault area for some memorable portraits.

Claire + Vance were extremely happy and full of emotion throughout they day. From the jitters during the getting ready, the emotional first look by the stair of the Omni hotel where they got ready, the heartfelt ceremony, to the excitement of the reception; it all showed their personality as a couple. My favorite image from this wedding is one right after the ceremony as they walked out of the building. It should be the ultimate symbol of a couple who just got married! :) The rest of the reception had an old hollywood vibe due to the decor and grandeur of the ballroom and the beautifully ornate ceiling. That and combined with the high-energy dancing made for one heck of a memorable party!

Having been kicked out from Yerba Buena Gardens a couple of week before due to lack of permit, fate placed me there again. This time to document Cynthia + Jon’s wedding on top of the waterfall in the middle of the garden. I am happy to say that I didn’t get kicked out this time. :-) Cyn and Jon are simply awesome. Surrounded by close friends and family, they started the day at the W Hotel right across the garden, and after the ceremony, we all went to the Koi Palace restaurant to enjoy a sumptuous 10-course Chinese banquet. Flash, their English bulldog, was such a big part of their day and if I want to get a dog, I think an English bulldog would be a strong candidate. :-) Thanks to Maurice for kicking butt as the second shooter.

I love my job! After shooting a 430-people wedding the previous week, I had a change of scenery when shooting a very intimate 20-people wedding in Glendale, CA. Jan + Doug decided to get married in Jan’s parents house, surrounded only by very close friends and family. Sweet and simple. Afterwards, they had a lovely dinner and conversation at Palate Food & Wine, Glendale, CA.

After an epic NYC e-session, I was really looking forward to shooting Pani & Ronnie’s wedding at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel ! Pani looked stunning in her Pnina Tornai/Louboutins combo and Ronnie was truly in his elements with his groomsmen. Surrounded by 430 of their friends and family, they had a beautiful ceremony by the Sofreh Aghd facing the ocean. Customary to Persian weddings, the reception was full of energy and I couldn’t help dancing along while capturing it all! The legendary Shideh Shahraies made sure that all the festivities went on smoothly and beautifully. Special thanks to my friend Marissa Feliciano for second shooting this wedding.

I’m very blessed to be back in Napa in one of my favorite venues in the world to shoot the wedding of Julie + Bert. The heat couldn’t dampen the joyful celebration and my friend Cliff Brunk helped me rocked the wedding! Julie was really happy and emotional all day, especially during the ceremony and father/daughter dance. While Bert and his groomsmen reminisce fondly about Seinfeld and their alma mater, Harvard. All in all, it was a great day in Napa.

Arvin + Lisa rule! I had the honor of flying for 16 hours to shoot their wedding in paradise on earth, Bali. It was the first time I shot a wedding in wicking t-shirt because it was super hot and humid. Lisa looked stunning in her Carolina Herrera dress and Arvin cool in his Armani tux. They exchanged vows inside the beautiful Infinity Chapel at the Conrad. The reception happened under a grand white tent on the Ocean Garden and they used the Fuji Instax mini instant photos for wedding favors. It’s lovely to witness Lisa + Arvin’s celebration in one of the most beautiful places on earth, surrounded by their family including Lisa’s 5 handful, adorable nephews. :-)

I had tons of fun shooting this wedding! Anne & Mike are very easygoing and trusted me to do what I do best, to create real images. Lots of awesome details including a badass Packard as the bride’s limo, seersucker suits for Mike and his and groomsmen, and the guests were transported via Santa Barbara Old Trolleys. Anne was very emotional throughout the day but really let loose at the reception and the band really brought the house down. I love my job! :) Special thanks to my second shooter Ari Simphoukham for coming along.

We started in their favorite date spot, Ti Couz cafe in the Mission, then going up to Dolores park to stroll with their headstrong Pekingese, Bobbie. :) It’s apparent that they’re very comfortable in their own skin and it was just a fun session despite my fear of getting my car towed in the city. Can’t wait to hang out again in Bali soon!

Katherine & Julian flew me out to San Francisco to document their wedding at the City Hall of just the two of them. I’ve never shot a wedding this small before, so I was really excited! After getting ready at the charming Inn Above Tide, we went to the City Hall and wait for our number to be called for the ceremony. Afterwards, we went to a lot of places around Tiburon and Sausalito for some portraits before returning to the Inn for cake cutting in their suite. I’m so glad Kat & Julian found me and I’m very happy to be part of their wedding. I also really love that I got to sign my name as a witness!!!

I never met Sami + Michael prior to their wedding day but once we met, I felt like hanging out with a couple of old friends! They truly are happy souls and Sami’s mom told me that Sami was born at the wrong time and she should’ve been a hippie. Bonus points as they walked down the aisle along some Beatles’ tunes!

Sunny from White Lilac did a killer job with the design and decor, incorporating paper cranes hanging from the chuppah & Jonathan Adler pieces into the reception tablescape.
And the ladies from Details Details are on top of everything as usual. It was an awesome day!

Camilla was from Sweden. David was from Ireland. They live & work in New York, and got married in Napa.

I was lucky enough to witness their very warm and intimate wedding at the gorgeous Carneros Inn in Napa Valley. With only 13 people present, I got the chance to know everyone and spent the day like I was part of the family.

Small wedding, sweet couple, amazingly chic details. My kind of wedding – despite the 115-degree weather.

Lizet + Edmund are my most adventurous couple by far. Their honeymoon plan includes climbing mount Kilimanjaro together. I could barely climb my stairs at home! Their wedding was very personal, 13 people total, at the always beautiful Parker Palm Springs. I love the thoughtful and chic details. Santa Monica, CA: I love weddings with concepts! :) I had the privilege of shooting Michelle + Ian’s wedding and this time I had my good friend Ed Atrero come to help me out. Michelle was high the whole time (with happiness, that is :)) and Ian is always funny, just as I thought he was when I did their E-Session. There are so many different memories that I have about this wedding, starting with the transformation of the church music to a glorious gospel/baptist band, the “granny car” with 500 horsepower engine with aviation fuel, and just the overall positive vibe throughout the night. We definitely had fun! :) On to the teasers! Ceremony: Saint Monica Catholic Church Reception: The Victorian at Heritage Square Detail shot taken by Ed Michelle getting ready This is a cool shot of Ian putting on his tux by Ed. Palm Springs, CA – Shooting at the Parker Palm Springs is always a delight for me. Combine it with the awesomeness that is Whitney + Alex, and I was on cloud nine! Whitney was absolutely gorgeous and Alex exuded Bond-like coolness. It was a great Jewish ceremony on the Croquet Lawn under a beautiful chuppah made of branches and orchids. Following the ceremony was a rockin’ reception which included a hora (my favorite!) and lots of dance floor actions. Kapolei, Hawai’i – Words could not describe how amazing Miki & Joel are. After spending 3 days in paradise with them, I can say that with certain authority. We stayed in the North Shore and they embrace me and my friend/2nd shooter Vanessa like family. Joel is the animation producer of the Simpsons so I know we’d get along really well before even meeting him. :-) The night before the wedding, guests enjoyed some local delicacies like Kalua pork, Lau Lau, and guava pies at the get-together luau by the beach. The actual wedding and reception took place at the Lanikuhonua, where they had the heartfelt, emotional ceremony by the crashing waves. Everything went perfectly from the modern beach-themed decor down to the last warm Malasada at the end of the night because of the coordination of Sandra Williams from Finishing Touch. Miki + Joel, thanks again for the amazing time. I am honored to be part of your special weekend! Dress: Jin Wang Catering: Cater To Me Flowers: Yvonne Floral Get-together the night before. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – I was honored to be invited to shoot Jessica + Jerry’s intimate wedding in Puerto Vallarta. The great thing about most destination weddings is that everyone is extra relaxed and loose and this one’s no exception. Everyone welcomed me with open arms and treated me like part of the family. Margaritas the size of my head (so they’re extra huge!) were flowing at the rehearsal dinner at Pipi’s. The next day, everyone gathered at the amazingly spectacular “little house by the beach,” Casa China Blanca for the ceremony and reception. It was scorching hot and the humidity is at about 1000% but Jessica + Jerry were so full of joy they barely noticed it. At the end of the night, some of the guests jumped into the enticing infinity pool to cool off. Congratulations and thank you again for letting me be part of your celebration, guys! They’re game for anything to get the picture, even dragging her gorgeous Vera Wang gown through the bushes prior to the ceremony. The gorgeous wedding details reflect Theresa’s design sensibilities, like the glamorous headpieces, flowers & the custom gazebo under which they exchanged their vows. I can’t believe it’s already one year since fun-loving Mishelle + Robb got married at the Parker Palm Springs! We had access to the ultracool Rockstar Suites at the new Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego. This place is off the hook and really perfect for their personality. Always a pleasure spending time with them again. :-)My buddy Ed Atrero brought his toyz (ringflash!) and let me play with it.
